Violence Policy Center Launches New Online Resource on the Firearms Industry

For Release: Tuesday, April 30, 2024

New Website is Part of VPC’s Ongoing Campaign for Gun Industry Accountability

Washington, DC – Today the Violence Policy Center (VPC) launched a new online resource center for its ongoing Campaign for Gun Industry Accountability. As the welcome page to the new website states, “Guns are the only consumer product manufactured in the United States that are not subject to federal health and safety regulation. This unique exemption has allowed the firearms industry to innovate for lethality, rather than safety.”

The site presents VPC studies and other published research on the firearms industry, information from its research library on gunmakers, as well as resources from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and other sources. Information on the site is broken down into six major categories: Assault Weapons, Gun Industry Evasion of Law, Gun Industry Marketing, Gun Industry Militarization, Gun Manufacturing, and Gun Trafficking. The site is designed for use by advocates and organizations, the news media, policymakers, litigators, and the general public. The site will be updated regularly with new research on the gun industry and visitors are also able to sign up for bi-weekly industry notes from the VPC’s research staff.

VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann states, “For more than 35 years, the Violence Policy Center has been the leader in focusing public and policymaker attention on the firearms industry and how gunmakers exploit their unique lack of federal health and safety regulation. It is long past time that the gun industry be held accountable by the American public for the inevitable death and injury that result from its design, manufacturing, and marketing decisions. This new online resource center is one more step toward that goal.“

To visit the site click https://gunindustryaccountability.org/, where visitors can also sign up for bi-weekly VPC research notes on the industry under “Stay Updated” at the bottom of the welcome page.
