VPC Releases New Handgun Ban Study, Unsafe in Any Hands: Why America Needs to Ban Handguns

For Release: Wednesday, March 1, 2000

The Violence Policy Center (VPC) today released Unsafe in Any Hands: Why America Needs to Ban Handguns. The nine-page study details the overwhelming role handguns play in gun death and injury in the United States and calls for a national discussion on banning them.

“Yesterday’s shooting in Michigan is only the latest shocking, yet now all too predictable, event made possible by the easy availability of small, easily concealable, increasingly lethal handguns. This is America’s future until we face the fact that the answer to America’s gun problem isn’t trigger locks, ‘smart’ guns, or even licensing and registration. It’s banning handguns,” states VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann.

Unsafe in Any Hands: Why America Needs to Ban Handguns examines: the toll of handgun violence in homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings; the need to regulate handguns as we do other consumer products; and the politics of gun control.
