Following the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, Violence Policy Center Legislative Director Kristen Rand issued the following statement:
“In the wake of recent horrific mass shootings involving semiautomatic assault rifles, President Trump has tapped a nominee who believes that bans on this category of military-bred firearm are unconstitutional. If Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination goes forward, we may well face a day when these weapons of war are constitutionally protected. While his nomination is being hailed by the National Rifle Association and its financial supporters in the gun industry, it is a dark day for those who care about public safety, including the threat these weapons pose to law enforcement: In 2016, one in four law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty were killed by an assault weapon.”
