Violence Policy Center Statement on Biden Administration Executive Actions on Guns

For Release: Thursday, April 8, 2021

Washington, DC — Following the announcement by the Biden Administration of a series of executive actions on guns, including proposed rules to stop the proliferation of ghost guns and pistol “stabilizing braces” that effectively turn assault pistols into short-barreled assault rifles, Violence Policy Center (VPC) Executive Director Josh Sugarmann issued the following statement:

“The measures announced by the administration on ghost guns and pistol braces are important first steps in beginning to rein in an out of control gun industry that works to undercut federal gun laws with no concern for the safety of the public or law enforcement. An updated report on firearms trafficking will help expose the gun industry’s role in supplying guns to criminals. The nomination of David Chipman as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will also ensure that the agency will properly exercise its regulatory oversight of the firearms industry. These are important first steps, but much more needs to be done to bring the gun industry under control.”
