Violence Policy Center Statement on the George Zimmerman Verdict

For Release: Sunday, July 14, 2013

Washington, DC — Last night, a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the killing of Trayvon Martin. Violence Policy Center (VPC) Executive Director Josh Sugarmann issued the following statement:

“George Zimmerman has been found not guilty in a court of law, but no jury can ever reverse the tragic shooting of a 17-year-old boy. It’s doubly tragic that Trayvon Martin would still be alive if Zimmerman had not brought a concealed handgun into a volatile situation. If the gun had not been there, George Zimmerman would not have confronted Trayvon Martin nor had the means to end his life. One life has been ended and another changed forever. There are no winners in this case.”
